Airtel Africa bets on AI, satellites and fibre to enhance services

Airtel Africa is enhancing artificial intelligence, satellite connectivity and a rapidly expanding fibre network to boost customer experience and reach millions of Africans beyond the limits of traditional mobile networks.

The telecoms operator, which serves 183.5 million customers across 14 markets, has added more than 3,250 network sites and 3,200 km of fibre over the past year as it expands coverage and capacity.

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar says the company has also commercially rolled out direct-to-device satellite connectivity in underserved rural areas, allowing customers with compatible smartphones to stay connected where terrestrial networks do not reach, provided they have a clear view of the sky.

Taldar says Airtel is deploying artificial intelligence to tackle a more everyday threat: spam and potentially fraudulent messages. Its free Spam Alert service identifies and blocks suspected spam SMS messages while sending customers real-time notifications.

He says the investments were part of a broader push to “go the extra mile” for customers by listening to their needs and using technology to make services more accessible.

“By digitising our services and broadening access to connectivity, we are helping to unlock extraordinary opportunities for people, businesses and economies across the continent,” Taldar said at the start of Customer Service Week 2026.

He says Airtel is also expanding retail outlets and other distribution channels, while deploying employees alongside frontline teams during the Customer Service Week to gather feedback and identify ways to improve reliability and customer experience.
