When Absa Bank Kenya set out to develop its latest digital banking platform, Absa Next, it began with a fundamental question: what do customers want from the future of banking?

The answer, according to Absa Bank Kenya Chief Executive Officer Yusuf Omari, was clear, that is, customers wanted greater convenience, simplicity and a single platform that would help them save, invest, access credit and build wealth.

That customer-first approach, combined with ideas from young Absa Bank Kenya employees, shaped the creation of Absa Next, a digital finance ecosystem that brings together everyday banking, savings, investments, credit and lifestyle services in one place.

Absa Bank Kenya Head of Digital Banking Steve Omamo says the platform was built after listening closely to customers and understanding how they wanted to interact with financial services.

“We asked the customer how they would like to experience banking. They told us convenience was key. Everything into one. Customers wanted to move forward in building their wealth,” Omamo said during the launch of Absa Next in Nairobi.

He said the platform has transformed the customer journey by making access to financial services faster and reducing the paperwork traditionally associated with opening accounts and managing banking needs.

“Previously, onboarding customers was very slow and involved a lot of papers. But with Absa Next, it is very fast,”said Omamo.

Beyond convenience, the platform also introduces incentives aimed at encouraging digital engagement, with customers rewarded for transactions completed through Absa Next.

“We reward customers for every transaction they make on Absa Next,” he said.

Absa Group Chief Executive for Personal and Private Banking Sitoyo Lopokoiyit said Absa Next reflects a broader shift in how financial institutions engage with customers by moving beyond traditional banking to become part of the moments that matter in people’s lives.

“At Absa, we say your story matters. Absa Next is not only for Absa Bank customers, it is a product for everyone,”said Lopokoiyit.

He said the platform demonstrates Kenya’s ability to develop financial innovations that respond to real customer needs.

“Innovation happens where we meet our customers and Absa Next is a great testament about that happening, built by Kenyans, built by our staff, built by the young people, for the young people, for Kenyans,” he said.

Omari said customer feedback will continue to guide the evolution of Absa Next as the bank seeks to deliver more personalised digital financial solutions.

“We will continue to improve on Absa Next based on your feedback. Absa Next is about listening to the customer. Absa Next is an innovation that has been developed in Kenya,” he said.

Absa Personal and Private Banking Director Moses Muthui said every generation of customers has pushed the bank to innovate and rethink the future of financial services.

“Every generation we have served as Absa have challenged us to evolve. We challenged the young people we work with and customers to build the next chapter of the bank,” he said.
