650 recognition of prior learning trainers dispatched to colleges

A total of 650 recognition of prior learning (RPL) practitioners have been trained, certified and dispatched to various Qualifications Awarding Institutions across Kenya to support implementation of RPL.

So far, over 2,500 individuals have been assessed and certified through RPL process since March this year. However, the government is keen on fast tracking the process.

Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), Council Chairperson, Stanley Kiptis, says: “They are now eligible for employment and ready for further knowledge acquisition along the skills pathway. They have also been registered in the Kenya National Qualifications Database as credible qualifications.”

Kiptis says the process will also benefit 623,865 refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya.

“RPL has presented an opportunity for this critical segment of the population to reap the benefits of formal recognition for their existing skills and knowledge without having to start from scratch. In addition, refugees enjoy inclusivity, enhanced confidence, and motivation as well as support for lifelong learning beyond formal classrooms,” he says.

KNQA is also focusing on strategies that will ensure seamless implementation of the National Qualifications Framework and its key components.

“The Kenya Credits Accumulation and Transfer System Policy Framework which awaits approval by the Cabinet complements the RPL Policy by ensuring clear progression and transitions. A national Policy on Micro-credentials is in the pipeline which will ensure that flexibility in RPL assessments and certification is achieved,”said Kiptis.

KNQA Director General Dr Alice Kande underscored the importance of RPL.

“RPL is a relatively new concept but one that holds massive potential to transform lives through recognition, validation and certification of skills and competencies and especially those acquired through non-formal and informal contexts,” said Dr. Kande.

RPL aims at facilitating the transition from informality to formality as well as multi entry/exit between the education system and the labour market.
