Why President Ruto says church regulation bill is ‘ill-advised’

The proposed bill seeking to regulate religious institutions are ill-advised. This is according to President William Ruto who says the Constitution provides for freedom of worship.

He says religious organisations in Kenya will not be regulated, instead, they will be allowed to self-regulate their activities.

“Our Constitution is explicit; there can be no limitations on the freedom of worship,” said President Ruto on Sunday at the AIC Milimani, Nairobi, during a church service.

The Religious Organisations Bill 2024, proposed by Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, who is a member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has attracted a backlash especially from religious institutions across Kenya.

“We will defend the freedom of worship in our country,” President Ruto said.

The President said the proposals that are being made “out there” about the regulation of religious institutions are ill-advised and that freedom of worship cannot be compromised.
