Why Juventus v Inter Milan is the soccer match of this weekend

One of the great European football rivalries, the ‘Derby d’Italia’, will take centre stage as our Match of the Week, as Juventus play host to Inter Milan in Serie A .

Match background

Juventus and Inter will do battle at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, with the Bianconeri looking to boost their hopes of a top-four finish and a guaranteed place in the UEFA Champions League next season, while the Nerazzurri want to keep up the pressure in the race for the Scudetto against Napoli.

What the teams are saying

Juventus manager Thiago Motta is hoping for a great contribution from his attacking unit: “Our forwards are the ones who at the moment have to contribute more to the team. Manu [Randal Kolo Muani] understands the right moment to drop deep or push forward.

“I want to see more of the strikers, because they have the quality to do it. Samuel [Mbangula] tried more, he was close to the opposition area and tried to cause problems with dribbling, but the other five I mentioned, I want to see more.”

Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi is still rankled by their 4-4 draw with Juventus earlier in the season: “We lost our shape a bit, then on the fourth goal we made a series of mistakes. These compromised a match we clearly deserved to win. There is bitterness, but as a coach I must analyse… It was frustrating, as we were facing a Juventus side whose greatest strength is defence and we created so many scoring opportunities without winning.”

Players to watch

The French forward is on loan at Juve from Paris Saint-Germain and has already made a positive impact in terms of sharpening the Turin side’s attack.

Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan

After a quiet first half of the season, Inter Milan attacker Lautaro Martinez is getting back to his best and finding the back of the net regularly.

The Argentine has scored four goals in Derby d’Italia matches down the years and will be hungry to add to his tally.

Head-to-head

In head-to-head matches, Juventus and Inter have met in 252 official matches across all competitions, with the Bianconeri claiming 112 wins compared to 77 for the Nerazzurri, while 63 games have been drawn.

When the teams met earlier this season, at the San Siro in October 2024, they played out a crazy 4-4 draw in which Inter went from 1-0 up to 2-1 down to 4-2 up, before Juve scored two late goals via Kenan Yildiz to secure a share of the spoils.
