Three top media companies on the spot over salary delays

The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) is demanding that three top media companies settle delayed salaries owed to journalists and other employees.

KUJ Secretary General Erick Oduor termed salary delays as an affront to media freedom.

Oduor said: “We have received distress calls from three media houses mainly, The Standard Group PLC, Mediamax and Radio Africa Group that have not paid their staff and correspondents for about 10 months in the wake of difficult economic times and high cost of living in the country.”

He, in a press statement on Sunday, termed the situation as dire.

“Delayed and non-payment of salaries of journalists and media workers by a number of media houses in Kenya has reached a crisis level and become the biggest threat to media freedom and human rights in Kenya,” said the KUJ boss.

To compel the affected to settle the arrears, Oduor wants advertisers to demand that media houses before doing business with them.

Oduor said: “To address these challenges we demand as follows…All media houses be required to provide proof of payment of salaries before accessing government advertising.”
