An innovation by Bradford Nyangiri and Felix Makori, who are students at Menyenya Secondary School in Nyamira County has been voted the overall winner at the just concluded 7th Edition of the Annual Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) National Science and Technology Exhibition.
The students designed Sunken Cooking Jacket, which is an innovative, multi-functional cooking stove “jiko” that is efficient and versatile
The jiko features three cooking points powered by a single fire source. Integrated with a fixed copper coil, the stove simultaneously heats water while cooking, maximizing energy use.
Additionally, the cooking vessels are insulated to minimize heat loss, ensuring that more energy is directed towards cooking rather than being wasted.
There were 220 students from across Kenya including refugee camps who showcased innovations within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields focusing climate change.
This year’s exhibition attracted 1,780 projects that were shortlisted for the National Science and Technology Exhibition held at a hotel in Nairobi.
Organisers of the national expo called for more public and private sector funding towards STEM courses and support to young talent.
