Starlink competition: Safaricom increases home fibre speeds

Amid stiff competition from Starlink and other internet service providers, Safaricom, has opted to increase internet speeds for its home and business customers.

Customers who were on unlimited monthly internet speeds of 10Mbps and 20Mbps will have their speeds increased by 50% to 15Mbps and 30Mbps, respectively. The telco has doubled speeds for those on 40Mbps while those on 100Mbps will have their internet speeds increased five-fold to 500Mbps monthly.

In addition, the telco has introduced a new 1000Mbps (Gigabit per second) Platinum plan, at Kshs 20,000 monthly.

Current customers will automatically be upgraded to the enhanced packages to enjoy the faster speeds.

“We have enhanced our Home Internet speeds to cater to the increased demand and usage by offering reliable connectivity and enhanced value for our customers. The introduction of the new speeds offers capability of handling the most demanding online activities with ease, including high-definition streaming 4K/8K, gaming, large file transfers, cloud computing, and virtual reality,” said Safaricom, CEO, Peter Ndegwa.

Starlink has introduced what some internet users dub as competitive pricing such as Kshs 1,300 for 50GB monthly or Kshs 6,500 monthly for unlimited internet access.
