Raila says Tuesday’s demonstrations will be peaceful

Azimio Leader Raila Odinga says there will be no destruction of property during the planned demonstrations on Tuesday.

Raila told journalist at a media briefing in Nairobi Monday, that contrary to insinuations by critics that there will be destruction of property and looting, the planned demonstration will be peaceful.

“I want to assure Mr. Ruto that there will be no destruction of anyone’s property as our demonstration will be peaceful,” he said.

The former premier clarified that Tuesday’s demonstrations hadbeen organized specifically for presenting memoranda to the Office of the President, the National Treasury, the Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC) and the Public Service Commission (PSC).

“Last time they denied us access to the CBD where we had intended to present the said memoranda, otherwise we would not have gone to Kawangware, Eastleigh, Mathare, Kibera, Kware and Pipeline, but tomorrow we shall specifically go to the streets where these offices are situated and I know there are no businesses along those streets,” Raila said.

He dismissed reports that the police had outlawed the Tuesday demonstration.

“Article 37 of the constitution provides that every Kenyan has the right to peaceably and unarmed, assemble to demonstrate, to picket and to present petitions to public authorities… and clearly this has not been suspended,” he said.

The Azimio leader said the demonstrations organized by Azimio have been peaceful and that it is the police that trigger violence.

“We repeat that the only violence and destruction of property that have taken place during our activities are when police invade our marches,” he said.
