Poor households to pay more for kerosene in latest pump price review

You will pay more for kerosene over the next one month after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) increased the pump price of paraffin by Kshs 0.35.

This is despite the landed cost of kerosene reducing by 0.83%, according to the latest figures by the EPRA.

In a statement, EPRA, Director General, Dr. Daniel Kiptoo further indicates that that the pump price of super petrol is up Kshs 0.66 per liter.

This is after the landed cost of imported super petrol reduced 1.09% during the month of May.

Dr. Kiptoo says effective midnight, the pump price if diesel will reduce by Kshs 1.12 per liter.

This is despite the landed cost of imported diesel increasing by 0.83% in May 2023.

EPRA further indicates that the average cost of Murban crude oil reduced from $83.36 per barrel in April to $79.55 per barrel in May 2023.

Despite this, the benefit of reduced crude oil prices to consumers was muted by a weaker shilling.

“The mean monthly US dollar to Kenya shilling exchange rate depreciated by 1.75% from Kshs 138.96 per US$ in April 2023 to Kshs 141.39 per US$ in May 2023,” Dr. Kiptoo said.

EPRA says the latest pump prices are inclusive of 8% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018.
