The Spouse of the Deputy President Pastor Dorcas Rigathi took her fight against alcohol and drug abuse to Machakos University where she told students and the clergy how drugs and alcohol affects their ability to procreate and keep families.
Speaking at the Machakos University grounds, Pastor Dorcas reminded the over 5,000 gathering that comprised students from 20 secondary schools and the clergy from lower Eastern region, the critical position men occupy in society as the “seed carriers” who propagate generations, and warned against the drinking of illicit brews that result in men losing their vigor for siring children.
“Drug addiction is in all homes, among the poor and the rich. Many mothers and fathers are troubled, and we must do something about it,” she said.

Pastor Dorcas highlighted the increasing number of widows in Kenya, where homes are manned by women, as men lose their lives from accidents caused by drunk driving.
NACADA Eastern Region Regional Manager Alex Njeru, said: “Kenyans have a habit of binge drinking ‘chafua meza’, a situation where alcoholic drinks line a table. However, these kinds of leisure activities that involve addictive substances result in increased family problems.”
“Alcohol and drug abuse will directly affect one who is not drunk and intoxicated. When a driver of a matatu, bus or private car meets with one who is drunk and driving, they are a danger to you and your family,” said Pastor Dorcas.

Machakos University Vice Chancellor Prof. Joyce Agalo warned that student drop-outs, abusive relationships, poor health, constrained family relationships and loss of future opportunities, were some of the effects of drug abuse and addictions.
