MTRH removes liver tumor from patient with three months to live

A team led by Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has successfully removed a 16x8cm sized tumor from a liver cancer patient.

The landmark highly specialized surgery offered hope to a 30-year old man from Busia County who had a life expectancy of about three months if the tumor had not been removed.

A statement from MTRH indicates that the patient has since been discharged from the ICU after successful tumor resection and is progressing well.

The HCC resection surgery was conducted by a team from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in collaboration with Moi University and Peruvian Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN).

Liver cancer account for the second largest number of cancer mortalities in the world with about 782,000 new cases reported annually.

MTRH says the team conducted another successful surgery on a 43-year-old woman from Uasin Gishu County who two giant vascular tumors of the liver using an innovative cost saving technique. This involves a combination of diathermy a normal saline, which cost less than $1 and is a substitute for Tissue link whose average cost $500.

The facility says the 43-year-old woman has already been discharged and is recuperating well.

“The collaboration between the Institutions aims at enhancing the capacity for surgical treatment of HCCs and Liver related ailments,” read in part a statement from MTRH.

The facility’s target is to start offering Liver Transplant Surgical Services.

“The Surgical team included Dr. Eloy Ruiz (Surgical Oncologist, INEN), Dr. Andrew Wandera (Surgical Gastroenterologist, MU/MTRH), Dr. Aida Kenseko (General Surgeon, MTRH), Dr. Andrew Wainaina (General Surgery Resident, MU), Dr. Elena Onofre (Consultant Anaesthesiologist, INEN), Dr. Obadiah Samoei (Consultant Anaesthesiologist, MTRH), Dr. Josephat Kerama (Consultant Anaesthesiologist, MTRH), Jessica Alarcon (Theatre Nurse, INEN), Mariah Tininah, Hadia Anoo Margaret and Everlyne Torori (Theatre Nurses, MTRH),” said MTRH.
