Lab officers trained on handling cholera amid forecasted El Nino

In preparation for El Nino’s potential impact, the Ministry of Health with support from the World Health Organization is conducting an intensive five-day training program on cholera and general microbiology for 24 dedicated laboratory officers.

The laboratory officers are drawn from 12 counties, predominantly representing Western, Nyanza, Central, and Eastern regions of Kenya.

The Ministry of Health says the training aligns with the advice provided by the Meteorology Department, urging various sectors to develop contingency plans for the anticipated heavy rains.

The World Health Organization in tandem with this training effort, has strategically positioned essential diagnostics, medications, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) supplies in high-risk counties.

Moreover, WHO has committed to continually enhancing the skills of healthcare workers, empowering them to efficiently detect, investigate, and respond to potential disease outbreaks.
