By Nicholas Waitathu

Kenya is set to strengthen its push for climate-resilient farming with plans to establish a new Centre of Excellence in Regenerative Agriculture.

The initiative, which is being spearheaded by Kilimo Trust in partnership with Egerton University, seeks to promote farming practices that restore soil health, improve productivity and reduce the environmental impact of agriculture.

The announcement follows talks between Egerton University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, and Kilimo Trust, Country Team Leader for Kenya, Anthony Mugambi.

The proposed centre of excellence is currently undergoing statutory and institutional approvals with the first phase of the project expected to cost about Ksh 40 million.

Prof. Kibwage says the partnership aligns with national and continental priorities on sustainable food systems, climate change and food security.

Regenerative agriculture is increasingly seen as key to building resilient farming systems in the face of climate pressures.

The regenerative agriculture centre is expected to drive research, innovation, and capacity development in sustainable and climate-smart food systems.
