Kenya shuts Telegram on national exam cheating concerns

The Kenyan government has ordered telcos operating in the country to shut social media platform Telegram during days when a national examination is being done.

A notice from Kenya’s telecom regulator, the Communications Authority of Kenya, directs the four telcom operators to deny access to Telegram during morning and afternoon periods when Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates sit for the month-long examination.

Communications Authority of Kenya, Director General, David Mugonyi said: “It has come to the attention of the [Communications] Authority [of Kenya] that the Telegram platform is being misused to perpetrate criminal activities, including compromising on the integrity of the ongoing national examinations.”
