KCB RFC needed three tries to overcome Nakuru RFC 20-12 in matchday seven of Kenya Cup action played at the Nakuru Athletics Club on Saturday.
The home side took an early lead, touching down then converting ten minutes into the game before Andy Cole crossed the white line for the Curtis-Olago led KCB RFC to reduce the deficit to two points. Darwin Mukidza added three points for the bankers just before the halftime through a penalty to give KCB RFC a narrow 8-7 lead at the break.
“The plan we had for this match did not go as we had envisioned. We did not fire from all cylinders, and we made a lot of mistakes especially missing two penalty kicks in the first half and knock ons that could have been avoided. However, we take the win and prepare for the next assignment,” said KCB RFC Assistant Coach Denis Mwanja.
Despite a difficult first half for Brian Wahinya, the skillful player made up for his adversities making a try for KCB RFC in the second half to extend their lead to 13-7 and light up the away stand that was silent for the better part of the first half.
Winger Festus Shiasi, who replaced Peter Kilonzo in the first half crossed the white line for the bankers once again before Darwin Mukidza’s successful conversion to bring the scores to 20-7.
Nakuru RFC made their second try and conversion in the dying minutes, but it was not enough to grab a win for the Wanyore side that enjoyed support from their raucous fans.
KCB RFC will resume action on February 3, 2024, against Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad at the den.
