Kalonzo blames President Ruto for the current IEBC crisis

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is accusing President William Ruto for the delays in reconstituting the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Kalonzo says the delays in appointing the electoral body commissioners have occasioned a constitutional crisis, noting that several by-elections are pending due to lack of IEBC commissioners.

So far, 11 by-election are pending comprising three constituencies; Uganja following appointment of Opiyo Wandayi to the Cabinet in August 2024; Banisa following the death of Hassan Kullow in a road accident on 29th March 2023 and Magarini following a successful petition against election of Harrison Kombe.

In addition, there are seven Members of the County Assembly who have lost their seats to election petition or death.

Kalonzo says the Azimio coalition has adhered to the strict timelines of the Court by nominating Koki Muli for the IEBC Selection Panel.

“The State itself has filed an appeal with the Kiambu High Court against our decision. They want candidates who are easy to influence and manipulate. It is a Ruto strategy to ensure there is no IEBC,” said Kalonzo.

The Wiper leader who spoke after worshipping at the PCEA Nguthuru Parish – ELIM Church in Kenol, Murang’a County also accused other arms of government for the delays in reconstitution of the IEBC.

“Speaker Wetangula is also part of the conspiracy against Kenyans. If they had taken time to marshall Parliament, as they did with Riggy G, the country would not be in a constitutional crisis,” said Kalonzo.
