Initiatives by Jambojet to foster sustainable transport

Jambojet is implementing a number of initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices within the air transport industry.

Through the initiatives, the airline is committed to reducing its carbon footprint, on the journey towards new zero by 2050.

“We are working on optimizing our operations to minimize fuel burn and reduce our scope 1 and 2 emissions. Similarly, we have initiatives to reduce waste, promoting circular economy, and carbon offsetting,” Jambojet Managing Director, Karanja Ndegwa.

This is in line with World Sustainable Transport Day, which emphasizes the critical role of safe, affordable, and sustainable transport systems in fostering economic growth and enhancing social welfare globally.

As urban areas become increasingly congested, and transport- related emissions on the rise, there is urgent need for innovative, sustainable travel solutions.

“Jambojet came to revolutionize flying, making it accessible and affordable. Since 2014, we have flown close to 8 million passengers, 44% of whom are first time flyers who otherwise would not have enjoyed the benefits of flying,” said Ndegwa.

As part of The Aviation Challenge, an initiative by SkyTeam, challenging global airlines to accelerate sustainable innovation and shared learning in the aviation industry, towards a carbon-neutral future. Through this initiative, Jambojet achieved an impressive 16% reduction in fuel burn by implementing initiatives such as reduced take-off power, longrange cruise, continuous descent approach, single engine taxi in, and use of ground power unit.

The airline also realized a 95.8% recycling rate for in-flight waste. It ensures that materials like plastics and paper are effectively sorted for recycling. Organic waste is repurposed into animal feed and organic fertilizers, creating a closed-loop system that minimizes landfill waste and supports agriculture.

In response to evolving customer preferences, Jambojet has also introduced an organic in-flight menu, packaged in biodegradable materials. This initiative not only caters to health – conscious travellers but also aligns with the airline’s sustainability goals.

Through collaborations with strategic partners, Jambojet is actively involved in tree planting in its various destinations, and community education programs aimed at combating deforestation and climate change. These efforts contribute to environmental restoration, enhance biodiversity, and improve carbon sequestration in the long term.
