National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njunguna Ndung’u has appointed Humphrey Wattanga Mulongo as the Commissioner General for Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
Through a gazette notice dated 22nd August 2023, Prof. Ndung’u appointed Wattanga on a three-year term.
The appointment follows a competitive recruitment process by the KRA Board of Directors.
Wattanga becomes the seventh Commissioner General of KRA, which was established in 1995.
The position became vacant after the then Commissioner General Githii Mburu resigned, and the Board appointing FCCA, CS Rispah Simiyu in an acting capacity.
Simiyu has steered KRA’s operations during the transition period and the KRA board thanks her for her service.
Wattanga is expected to provide strategic leadership and institutionalize reforms towards customer centricity, digitization as well as domestic revenue mobilization in line with the Bottom- Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
He will oversee the day-to-day operations of KRA, the management of its funds and property, and provide leadership to staff.
Wattanga will ensure that KRA operates in line with its Vision “To become a Globally Trusted Revenue Agency, Facilitating Tax and Customs Compliance”.
He will be the Accounting Officer of KRA and will also serve as a member of the Board of Directors.
Wattanga brings on board strategic leadership and a wealth of experience having served in various capacities.
Until this appointment, he served as the Managing Director of MEGHRAJ Capital and was previously the Vice Chairman of the Commission on Revenue Allocation from 2017 to 2022.
Before that he was a senior partner AFCORP Investment, Johannesburg, South Africa from 2004 to 2017.
He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor in Biochemical Science from Harvard University. He is a member of Kenya Institute of Bankers.
