The national government is, through a public private partnership, set to establish a gold refinery in Kakamega County. President William Ruto says the refinery will benefit thousands of artisanal miners in western Kenya.
“We need to unlock the gold mining potential that exists in this area,” President Ruto said.
Speaking at Ekambuli Church of God in Khwisero, Kakamega County, the President regretted that gold miners in the region had not made meaningful gains despite being in the trade for close to 60 years.

He urged the more than 5,000 gold mining artisans to form a cooperative society so that they get a mining licence.
