High Court stops implementation of new university funding model

The High Court has suspended the implementation of the new university funding model until a case challenging its operationalisation is heard and determined.

The case was filed in October last year by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), the Elimu Bora Working Group, Boaz Waruku, and the Students Caucus, on grounds that the university funding model is discriminatory and locks thousands of students out of higher education.

Justice Chacha Mwita says the case has faced delays occasioned by the Attorney-General, Cabinet Secretary for Education, and the Kenya Universities and College Placement Service not filing their submissions on time.

The case comes up on December 16, 2024.
