The government has increased the amount motorists pay for road maintenance from the previous Kshs 18 to Kshs 25.
Had the government not hiked the road maintenance levy, the cost of fuel would have reduced by Kshs 8.35 per litre of super petrol while a litre of diesel would have decreased by Kshs 8.50.
The Kshs 7 per litre increase is captured in the latest pump price review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The increase is despite the former immediate Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assuring Kenyans that the Road Maintenance Levy would not be increased, rather the government would explore other ways of raising the amount.
