All preparations are complete for the Great Chepsaita Cross Country scheduled for 2nd December 2023. Speaking while checking on the preparations at the venue of the race in Chepkemel in Turbo, Uasin Gishu county, the cross-country patron Farouk Kibet said the aim of the race is to identify athletic talent and assist unemployed youth in the area.
Kibet said organizers would use the event to have a national conversation on doping, reiterating the need to sensitize athletes about the dangers of doping.
He says the Great Chepsaita Cross Country has attracted participation from Kenyan and Ugandan athletes.
Athletics Kenya central Rift chairman Abraham Mutai said over Kshs 7 million has been earmarked as prize money for winners in the several categories.
Mutai said the Great Chepsaita cross country is the toughest due to the terrain of the loop, noting that it will help athletes as they prepare for the next season.
The race has been reduced to 8.05 kilometers for both senior men and women due to the steepness of the field.
Women under 20 will run 4.91 km as men under 20 will cover 6.48 km.
The area has a maximum altitude of 2051m and minimum altitude of 2022m.
